If you've been told you have a "slipped disc" or a "bulging disc," you may be wondering what the difference is — and whether chiropractic can help with either. The short answer: yes, but the approach differs.

Bulging Disc

A bulging disc occurs when the outer wall of the disc (annulus fibrosus) weakens and extends beyond its normal boundary. The disc material hasn't escaped — it's simply protruding. This is often asymptomatic initially but can compress nearby nerves as it worsens.

Herniated (Slipped) Disc

A herniated disc involves a tear in the outer wall, allowing the inner gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) to leak out. This leaked material is highly inflammatory and can cause severe, shooting pain — commonly down the leg (sciatica) or arm.

The Gonstead Approach to Both

Because Gonstead chiropractic uses full-spine X-rays and precise adjustment, we can identify which vertebral level is causing the problem and address it without disturbing healthy segments. Many patients with both bulging and herniated discs see significant improvement without surgery.
