Scoliosis — an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine — affects approximately 3% of adolescents globally. In Malaysia, awareness remains low, and many cases are only discovered when the curve has already progressed past the point where conservative treatment is most effective.

The Adam's Forward Bend Test

The simplest screening tool costs nothing. Ask your child to bend forward at the waist with hands together, legs straight. Look along the spine from behind. If one side of the back is higher than the other (rib hump), this warrants a professional evaluation immediately.

Why Timing Matters

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis progresses fastest during growth spurts — typically ages 10–14 in girls and 12–16 in boys. Curves under 25° are generally manageable with chiropractic care and specific exercises. Curves above 40–50° may require surgical consultation.

What We Do at Bewell

We take full-spine standing X-rays to measure the Cobb angle precisely. We then develop a care plan that includes Gonstead adjustments to reduce the compensatory patterns, combined with scoliosis-specific exercises. Progress is tracked at each stage.
