Sciatica — that sharp, burning, or shooting pain that travels from your lower back through your buttock and down one leg — is one of the most debilitating conditions we see at Bewell. And it's becoming more common among Malaysians, particularly those who work long hours seated.
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. When something compresses or irritates it — usually a herniated lumbar disc or a misaligned vertebra — it creates the characteristic radicular pain pattern. The pain you feel in your leg is actually originating in your spine.
The instinct to lie down and rest is understandable, but prolonged bed rest weakens the supporting muscles and can allow the compression to worsen. Gentle movement, combined with targeted spinal correction, tends to produce better outcomes.
We use full-spine X-rays to identify the exact level of compression — L4/L5 and L5/S1 are most common. Adjustments are made only at the subluxated segment, allowing the disc to decompress and the nerve to heal. Most patients experience measurable improvement within 4–8 sessions.
