Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature in the spine, it occurs in teenagers mostly from the aged of 10 to 15 as they go through the stage of puberty. Majority of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, as of that the causes of it is unknown. While the caused for most cases is unknown, there’s aside where scoliosis can occur with a condition, here we refer as the 3 main types of Scoliosis.


The 3 Main Types of Scoliosis

Congenital: occurs at the stage of birth; the curve is presence and affects newborns and young infants.

Idiopathic: occurs at adolescent stage, curve will progress into adulthood with an unknown cause.

Neuromuscular: occurs secondarily to a neuromuscular condition, curve tends to progress rapidly worse in this condition.


The severity of scoliosis is determined by a degree angle in curvature. A curve degree below 20 degree is mild, between 25 degrees and 40 degrees is moderate, and any more than 45 degrees is severe.

Detecting for scoliosis can be conducted using “Adam’s forward bend test”, where an abnormal hump is seen on the back is a sign of scoliosis. Besides that, signs of scoliosis are such as:

· Uneven shoulders.

· One hip appears higher than the other.

· One shoulder blade appears more prominent.

· Uneven waist

Along with the curvature in spine, symptoms like low back pain, stiffness, shortness of breath and fatigue may be experienced as well.


Treatment for scoliosis varies from person to person depending on their condition, while invasive spinal surgery may be there, alternative treatment like chiropractic care can help to maintain. The aim of chiropractic care is not to cure scoliosis but to alleviate and relieved any symptoms of pain and discomfort caused. Over time, these treatments can result in improvement towards daily life activities and changes, also lessen the severity of curvature.


What should you do prior to obtaining scoliosis chiropractic treatment?

- Start off by obtaining a full spine x-ray, this is so chiropractors can analyze the severity of the condition.
